Ft. Stockton April 26, 2009

Sunday afternoon, April 26th, I drove to Ft. Stockton to present a program on Women on Frontier Army Posts and How to Get Started in Living History at Historic Ft. Stockton, a restored frontier army post. There were about 20 ladies there which thrilled Martha, the curator of the site. I began with a skit presenting the letters of Laura Clark Carpenter, an army wife who was at Fort Stockton in 1860. Then, I told about life on a frontier post from the point of views of officer's wives, servants and laundresses. Of course, someone "had" to up those other women"soiled doves" and they had to be discussed too.

Many of the women were wanting to volunteer at the fort as costumed docents so I discussed getting started as a living historian and creating period clothing. I also showed a slideshow of past Ft. Stockton events.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the presentation and I left feeling very good about the whole thing.

On Monday , we sold our Trail Manor pop-up to a man from Louisiana. "oh, glorious day" We were delighted to have that burden lifted. Two trailers are just two, too many. We are getting ready to go to Ft. Chadbourne this weekend for another event. Then it will be only a three week countdown until we leave on our big trip.

Ft. Richardson Frontier Days

April 16-19 was Ft. Richarson's Frontier Days event. We drove to Wichita Falls to visit with Geri and the Allisons briefly and then proceeded to Jacksboro. Friday was their education day. The day began with an overcast sky which opened up about the time groups of students began arriving. Do you know what soggy kids smell like? By the afternoon the day had dried out and brighten up some. The kids were excited and interested in the event. The Ft. Richardson staff is always very hospitable and brought us lunch. My friend, Sandy Wyllie, was with me in the Officer's Quarters which housed a "sheriff's family", a "sutler" a "period schoolhouse" and "servants" (Sandy and I). Chuck was at the hospital with his engineering tools. He now has a sergant, Terri Trotti, which helps a great deal.



Saturday turned out to be quite a nice day with a good crowd for the park. There was a dance that evening with our favorite Sweet Song String Band. We headed home on Sunday to rescue Joan from our two sweet but energetic puppies. It seemed that despite the rain "a good time was had by all".

Our next trip is to Ft. Richardson in Jacksboro, Texas ( weather zip: 76458 )for a living history event. There is a dance inside the old Commissary, one of the historic buildings. It is lantern lit with all the ambiance of the 1800s and is such fun.
